Policy Statement

Unicorn Play Club is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all children who attend our sessions. The safety and well-being of every child is our highest priority. We believe all children have the right to protection from harm, regardless of age, gender, race, religion, ability, or background.

1. Aims and Objectives

  • To ensure all staff understand their responsibilities in safeguarding children.

  • To establish and maintain an environment where children feel secure, valued, and

    respected.

  • To provide staff with clear procedures to follow if safeguarding concerns arise.

  • To work in partnership with parents, carers, and relevant external agencies.

2. Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

All concerns should be reported to the DSL, which will act appropriately and follow local safeguarding procedures.

3. Staff Responsibilities

All staff and volunteers must:​

  • Complete safeguarding training and renew it every 2 years.

  • Understand and follow the club’s safeguarding procedures.

  • Report any concerns or disclosures to the DSL immediately.

  • Maintain professional boundaries with all children.

4. Safer Recruitment

We follow safer recruitment practices, including:

  • Obtaining enhanced DBS checks for all staff and volunteers.

  • Collecting at least two references.

  • Conducting face-to-face interviews and induction training.

5. Procedures for Reporting Concerns

 

If a child discloses abuse or a staff member has a concern:

  1. Listen without judgment or interruption.

  2. Record the disclosure using the child’s own words.

  3. Report to the DSL immediately.

  4. Do not promise confidentiality—explain that you must pass it on to help keep them

    safe.

6. Allegations Against Staff

Any allegations against a staff member will be taken seriously and reported to the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO). The staff member may be suspended while an investigation is carried out.

7. Child Supervision and Safety

  • Children are supervised at all times during sessions.

  • The club maintains a high adult-to-child ratio.

  • No child will be left alone with a single adult in an isolated area.

  • Children will only be released to authorized adults.

8. Online Safety (if applicable)

If digital platforms or communication are used:

  • All content will be age-appropriate and safe.

  • Personal information will not be shared.

  • Parent consent will be required for any digital communication.

9. Confidentiality

All safeguarding concerns will be kept confidential and shared only with those who need to know. Records will be stored securely in line with GDPR regulations.

10. Review

This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if there are changes in legislation or guidance.
