Unicorn Play Club Policy on Supporting Children with SEND and SEMHD
Our Aims and Commitment
Unicorn Play Club is committed to providing a supportive and inclusive environment where every child can flourish. We aim to nurture confidence and positive self-esteem in all children, especially those who may need additional help with their learning, behaviour, or emotional wellbeing. We actively challenge any negative attitudes and ensure that all staff, families, and children treat each other with respect.
-------------
What We Mean by SEND
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) refers to children or young people who require extra help due to learning difficulties or disabilities. This includes young people up to the age of 25 who:
-
Experience learning challenges well beyond those of their peers; or
-
Have a disability that limits their ability to take full part in education or activities
usually available to others their age.
-------------
Understanding Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs (SEMHD)
SEMHD encompasses difficulties with managing emotions, social skills, or mental health. At Unicorn Play Club, we are dedicated to supporting children facing these challenges with patience and understanding.
Children with SEMHD might struggle to form friendships or behave in ways that can be withdrawn or disruptive. Conditions may include anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, attachment difficulties, and other recognised mental health concerns.
-------------
How We Support SEND and SEMHD at Unicorn Play Club
-
We warmly welcome children with additional needs and invite families to try a session to see how well our setting suits them.
-
For children who need one-to-one assistance, we require a suitably trained adult to be present on site at all times.
-
Parents and carers are encouraged to discuss their child’s needs with our Lead Instructor or management team during registration, to help us plan the right support.
-------------
Promoting Inclusion and Collaboration
We provide a flexible environment that allows us to make reasonable adjustments and offer extra support where necessary, so no child feels left out or disadvantaged. We ensure our staff communicate well and work together consistently to support each child’s individual needs.
-------------
Unicorn Play Club is passionate about making sure all children feel safe, valued, and able to enjoy their experience fully.
